stay tune we are under construction.

Born in 1947 to Emmett and Maydee Lindsey of Austin, Texas, a product of the era of Jim Crow and Civil Rights...it's been an incredible experience to live on both sides of the American historical scene. A graduate of Fisk University of Nashville, Tennessee, in 1969. Witnessing the assanitation of Dr Martin Luther King, Jr was once of my most awesome life remembrances. I am one of the fortunate ones and talented 10th that has come forth from a mighty time in life. I love my life and have no regrets. It is now my privilege and responsibility to write our stories, especially the stories of the Texas "Chitlin' Circuit". I am the last generation to know the stories and know where to find the stories from bluesman "Spot" Barnett of the 120's who hails a resume from Ike and Tina Turner band, Bobby Blue Bland , and many many more. Now at age 73, one of the few living who traveled the entire circuit and has documented his travels, "Spot" was honored by the Austin Music Hall during SXSW of 2008. I may not know all, but I know enough to write and be the keeper of the history as a native and 4th generation Austinite. . Texas has a hugh contribution to Blues and Jazz in America, but even greater, we honor the sound that we as decedents of Africa have brought forth to create the uniquie American music sound and scene of Blues and Jazz.. I feel fortunate to know the Book of Lamentations in the Bible, realizing it's importance..recognizing that to lament means to be "blue"...Jeremiah sang of opression..."the blues".What a wonderful understanding of how we have come this far by faith. Born into the AME Church, reared by a jazz musician, and and aunt who played the blues every Friday and Saturday night with friends (along with IW Harper) is my legacy along with my father as Sunday School Superintendent for most of my life...I as the Sunday Scchool musician, Church organizt and student of one of America's most prestigious Universities...I am blessed. Now , at at the age of 60, it is my honor to give back. Please visit www.historicvictorygrill.org to view 12 years of my work. That's what I have been doing, along with enjoying my mom, my wonderful sister ( in photo), 6 grandchildren, my family and community. Blest be the tie that binds us in Christian love is all I can say.

Krudas Cubensi

Victory Grill, Feb. 16

"ˇQue viva Cuba!" The Cuban flag hung above the well-worn stage at a capacity Victory Grill Saturday night as local musicians donated their talents to raise money for ArtReach's community music and youth mural-painting programs. In a biting parody of Cuban salseras like La Lupe and Celia Cruz, Wanda Krudas of local trio Krudas Cubensi shelved her hardcore feminist hip-hop persona to don a showgirl dress, neon-pink wig, and high heels. Equal parts musical performance and Spanglish comedy routine, she belted out tunes like "La Negra Tiene Tumbao" and pulled flasks and phones from her bosom as if it were a junk drawer. Then, she lost the outfit, and Krudas Cubensi launched an all-out verbal assault on the patriarchy, spitting rugged rhymes over banging Latin-tinged beats. The femcees celebrated Cuba, womanhood, and Afrocentricity, skewering Western standards of beauty with call-and-response choruses like, "La gorda llegó; la gorda soy yo!" ("The fat lady has arrived; I am the fat lady!"). Krudas proved they're not only the best black, radical, Cuban, lesbian, feminist, bilingual hip-hop crew in Austin but among the best hip-hop crews in Austin period. Local MCs beware: Step to Krudas, and get knocked the hell out. Carnival time followed as Buscando el Monte, a ninepiece ensemble featuring three horns and a small army of percussionists, pounded out a frenetic Afro-Cuban comparsa as enormous paper puppets paraded through the crowd.
